How A Simple Food Shoot Turned Conceptual
Joloko KL is an Afro-Caribbean restaurant in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, serving over 50 unique mouth watering dishes. From the humble walnut hummus to its exquisite square Tequila donuts, Joloko also shelves a fine selection of wine to suit any occasion.
Having met with its fun and creative owners—Kit chan and Rick Joore, we were able to come up with a conceptual shoot for the 12 dishes at the time.
Initially, they were only thinking of producing flat-lay imagery, but after a few rounds of bouncing ideas, we all agreed on playing with props and having models on set to conceptually bring the menu to life!
Starting with my visual board, each menu was carefully depicted with playful character representation, infused with wit and hell of a styling! It was plenty fun!
There was a lot of preparation involved in terms of prop creation, styling and make-up. This was a small production but we pulled it through together, from beginning to finish.
Here are some photos of the process from visual board to prop creation and wardrobe selection and up until the day of the shoot.
